Linux kernel sound drivers are being prepared for MIDI 2.0, a new and improved protocol for digital music devices. This major overhaul includes higher resolution, superior articulation, a Universal MIDI Packet for easier transport, less jitter, and more. Linux sound subsystem maintainer Takashi Iwai has sent out a set of 36 patches to add support for MIDI 2.0 functionality using USB audio and raw MIDI drivers.
