Amazon will pay a $25 million fine to FTC and will revamp its deletion practices and privacy safeguards after violating the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. Amazon reportedly retained children’s recordings and didn’t delete geolocation data unless requested by parents, something that continued until 2022 due to faulty fixes. The data was kept to train Alexa’s machine learning algorithms.
Photonics computing startup Lightmatter is offering a hardware-software combo based on optical computing that it claims is faster and more efficient than GPUs and TPUs that use traditional silicon gates and transistors. Using microscopic optical waveguides that allow the light to perform logic operations, the chip’s main power draw is creating the light itself, then reading and handling the output.
